A Love Letter to the Land That Became My Soul’s Home
✈️ My First Big Adventure Beyond Europe — And the Culture Shock That Changed Me

About 12 years ago, shortly after I moved to Dublin, I took a trip to Thailand without knowing it would open the door to my biggest passion: traveling and discovering new cultures.
It was my first time leaving Europe, and the flight was long. I remember a stopover in Dubai that lasted about eight hours, so I left the airport to explore. It was my first real interaction with a culture so different from my own. I had always been fascinated by the bustling bazaars I’d seen in movies.
Coming from Dublin, where walking is part of daily life thanks to the mild weather, I tried to do the same in Dubai. But to my surprise, the streets were almost empty. Locals looked at me like I was crazy, saying, “You can’t just walk around. It’s way too hot. You need a taxi!”
That was my first real culture shock. The climate, the pace, the contrast. I had stepped into a different world, and it was only the beginning of my journey.
Eventually, I boarded my flight to Bangkok. It was with Emirates, my first time on such a massive plane, a double-decker. Everything amazed me.
🛬 Arriving in Bangkok: The Warmest Welcome I Never Expected

When I landed in Bangkok, I remember the huge queue for visas. Back then, you had to get your visa on arrival.
The first Thai person I met was the driver from the hotel. I think it was a family-run business. He was incredibly friendly and gave me such a warm welcome. Just like the rest of the staff. I think I still have some of them on social media.
I stayed in Bangkok for two days. It was super cloudy and I couldn’t see the sun at all. So different from now, but I’ll share more about that in another post.
Street food was everywhere. The fruits tasted real, sweet, juicy, full of flavor. The smell of lemongrass filled the air. It was love at first sight.

🌴 Falling in Love With Krabi: The Moment I Found Peace
Next, I flew to Krabi, specifically Ao Nang. I stayed in another family-run hotel, and again, the people were so kind, warm, and welcoming.
The beach was just a 3-minute walk from the hotel. I remember the sand felt like flour between my toes, and the water was crystal clear. That’s when I knew I belong here. I hadn’t felt that kind of peace in a very long time.
🌅 Sunsets, Lemongrass & Street Food: The Sights, Scents, and Magic That Hooked Me

Sunsets and sunrises were pure magic. Cotton-candy pink skies that turned deep red as the sun dipped below the horizon.
I can still feel the golden sand, remember the salt in my hair, and smell that unique mix of street food, lemongrass, and Thai massage oils. If you’ve been to Thailand, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
I had my first Thai massage there. I can’t describe it in words. I felt like I was reborn. I ended up getting one every day.
I took my first long-tail boat trip, followed by a speedboat tour to nearby islands like Phi Phi, James Bond Island, and Maya Bay. I felt like I was living in a dream.
I rented a motorbike with no plan, no destination, no hurry. Just freedom. Winding roads, hidden waterfalls, quiet temples, and secret beaches. It felt like discovering a new world.
🌊 The Islands That Stole My Heart

After a week in Krabi, I traveled to Koh Samui. To this day, it’s still my favorite island. I’ve returned several times, and every person I’ve brought has loved it too. It’s just magical.
From the ethical Elephant Sanctuary to amazing food markets, from white sand beaches to clear turquoise water. Everything is special. I took a boat trip to the marine park and lagoon, explored Koh Phangan, and once again rode a motorbike all around the island. It was priceless.
Each island has its own soul. Some are buzzing with energy, while others are quiet and meditative. I’ve swum in hidden lagoons, floated past limestone cliffs, and wandered through colorful night markets.
No matter how many places I visit, Thailand always finds a new way to surprise me.
🏡 Why Thailand Will Always Feel Like Home
Some places you visit once. Others stay with you forever. Thailand is the latter for me. It’s more than a vacation destination. It’s a feeling.
It reminded me how powerful human connection is, even without a common language. It sparked my love for photography, writing, and the joy of slow travel.
🌸 The Little Moments I’ll Never Forget: Thai Tea, Temples, and Timeless Peace

What I love most about Thailand isn’t just the picture-perfect beaches. It’s the everyday magic.
It’s sipping Thai iced tea in a quiet roadside café. It’s the smell of jasmine and lemongrass. It’s hearing monks chant in golden temples at dawn.
These small, beautiful moments stay with you long after the trip ends. They become part of who you are.
That’s why I keep returning. Not for Instagram shots, but for how it feels to simply be there.
Final Thoughts
They say you don’t choose the places you love. They choose you. And Thailand chose me.
I’ll keep choosing it again and again. Whether you’re dreaming of your first visit or planning your tenth, I hope this blog becomes a small spark of inspiration.
